Short story: Latest WooCommerce Stripe Gateway (3.6.4) is not yet tested with WC 3.7.0 and also not complying with new EU SCA regulations. Please give top priority to both of these since the deadline for supporting SCA is September 14th 2019, after which many credit card payments will be declined without SCA compliance.

    Long story:

I received an email from Stripe today. Subject: “Action required: update your WooCommerce integration with Stripe to help avoid declined payments”.

“Starting 14 September, new industry-wide regulation will introduce Strong Customer Authentication (SCA) requirements on many payments in Europe. Payments that don’t use two-factor authentication may be declined by your customers’ banks.

Our information shows you’re currently using WooCommerce to accept payments with Stripe. WooCommerce has released an update to be ready for SCA. To avoid an increase in declined payments, you’ll need to update to the latest version of WooCommerce before 14 September.”

I wanted to upgrade my WooCommerce Stripe Gateway plugin but it seems I already have the latest version (3.6.4). This version was not tested with WC 3.7.0 which also prevents me from upgrading WC as a whole.

September 14th is coming and I’m concerned about not being able to accept credit cards via Stripe gateway.

    Thanks
    Yuval

  • Hi @yuvalr80,

Thanks for reaching out to us. It looks like the Stripe version on the site is a bit behind. The current version is 4.2.3 and supports SCA.

Once you update the extension, you’ll be ready for SCA.

    Hi @3sonsdevelopment

Sorry, my bad, the WC Stripe Gateway version I have is indeed 4.2.3. Still I got the Stripe email and WC warning (on the plugin page) that this version was only tested against WC 3.6.4.

    Please advise,

    Yuval

    Here’s the warning:

Heads up! The versions of the following plugins you’re running haven’t been tested with the latest version of WooCommerce (3.7).

Plugin Tested up to WooCommerce version
Enhanced E-commerce for Woocommerce store 3.6.0
    Facebook for WooCommerce 3.3.5
    Mailchimp for WooCommerce 3.6.5
    WooCommerce Continue Shopping 3.3.3
    WooCommerce Stripe Gateway 3.6.4

All plugins (except WC itself) have the latest version….

    Hey @yuvalr80,

No worries at all. I wanted to make sure that you’re able to get updated and be ready for SCA.

If you don’t see the option to update Stripe from your dashboard, you may need to delete it and then install it again from www.remarpro.com to make sure you get the current one. It definitely works with WooCommerce 3.7

We do recommend making any extension updates that are available before updating WooCommerce itself. Often times a plugin author won’t change the tested up to number until they make an update to the plugin. It may continue to work as it always has even it doesn’t list 3.7 compatibility just yet. Some will make an update just to increase the compatibility number, but not all do that.

Let me know if you have any questions.

    @3sonsdevelopment

But the version I have of Stripe Gateway is the latest – 4.2.3. The WC 3.7 incompatibility is one thing, but why did I get the warning email from Stripe…?

    Yuval

    Hi @yuvalr80,

As long as you have the latest version you are good to go. Stripe may be just encouraging everyone to upgrade so they are prepared. Regardless, version 4.2.0+ is what you need to be ready for SCA.

@3sonsdevelopment Just to be sure: Can I keep the using the SCA-compatible Woocommerce Stripe Gateway 4.2.3 without upgrading to WC 3.7?

Because I can’t upgrade to WC 3.7 – upgrading breaks the site, resulting in “Your cart is empty” pages when adding products to cart (after clearing all caches, server side and client side). There are other plugins on my WP that are not WC 3.7 compatible so they could be at fault, but WC Status itself is listing WooCommerce Stripe Gateway 4.2.3 as one of them. Here is the list (WC Stripe is the last one):

    Active plugins (28)
    ….
WooCommerce Continue Shopping by HappyKite – 1.3.1 – Not tested with the active version of WooCommerce
Enhanced E-commerce for Woocommerce store by Tatvic – 2.2.0 – Not tested with the active version of WooCommerce
Facebook for WooCommerce by Facebook – 1.9.15 – Not tested with the active version of WooCommerce
Mailchimp for WooCommerce by Mailchimp – 2.2.2 – Not tested with the active version of WooCommerce
WooCommerce Stripe Gateway by WooCommerce – 4.2.3 – Not tested with the active version of WooCommerce

I think there’s too much anomaly. Please confirm with devs once again, why is WooCommerce Stripe Gateway 4.2.3 listed as “not tested with the active version of WooCommerce”.

    (@yuvalr80)

@3sonsdevelopment to be precise, WC 3.7 claims that WC Stripe Gateway 4.2.3 was tested up to WC 3.6.4

You can use Stripe 4.2.3 with WooCommerce 3.6.4.

If there were any incompatibilities with Stripe 4.2.3 and WooCommerce 3.7, we would fix them right away.

What the “tested up to” tag really tells you is there hasn’t been an update to that plugin (Stripe or whatever) since a new version of WooCommerce 3.7 was released. It does not indicate there is a known incompatibility.

    Thread Starter yuvalr80

    (@yuvalr80)

    @3sonsdevelopment Okay, thanks.

The “tested up to” is important. The fact that there are no changes made to Stripe 4.2.3 doesn’t mean it would necessarily work with WC 3.7. There can always be issues so everything must be always tested. Not fun I know ??

    Yuval

    Hey @yuvalr80,

Trust me, it’s used on hundreds of thousands of stores. We use it on WooCommerce.com. It’s tested. They just elected to not release an update that only changes the tested up to tag. If there had been a compatibility issue we would have patched it and released an update.

    Take care

@3sonsdevelopment thanks for clarifications. I wanted to ask something related.
I have WC 3.5.7 installed. If I update only Stripe to the latest version 4.2.3 would I be ok for SCA (?) or should I also update WC in a newer version? Thanks

Good question. The SCA compatibility is part of Stripe so as long as it is running 4.2+ you’ll be ok. We’d always recommend using the latest version of the WooCommerce core too, but it’s not required for SCA.

    Hi guys,

Quick question. Obviously the 14th of september is approaching. My website developer has updated all woocommerce plugins on all my websites to 3.7.

With this in mind and having been updated are we all OK for SCA compliance? Stripe can’t help a great deal on this as obviously put the emphasis on woocommerce rather than themselves My recurring subscriptions run through woocommerce and go through into my stripe account

As far as we are aware, I presume the pre-existing recurring subscriptions set up pre-sep 14th are exempt and will hopefully, on the whole, continue trouble free?

This is obviously something that will be on many people’s minds and not just my own I’m sure.

I have WooCommerce subscriptions using Stripe and they have started failing from today.
WooCommerce sent me an email saying that an update for subscriptions would be ready tomorrow (17 Sept 2019) and payments may fail until then.
Subscription payments are NOT fine at the moment and if you take subscriptions, you may have a problem with declines.
