I am at my wit’s end here, and hope you can help. I use Blubrry Powerpress in conjunction with MemberPress to offer premium, password-protected feeds for my paying Patrons (subscribers).

Today I noticed that for one of my podcast shows, The Town Whispers, when I am in the Post for an episode and verify/save the URL and info for the latest episodes, the saved information is not “taking” and is not saving in the MySQL database. It only happens for one specific feed: https://www.chillingtalesfordarknights.com/feed/the-town-whispers-premium/

I can enter the info in the WordPress post for this particular episode, and save/update the post, but when it refreshes the entry boxes are empty and the saved info doesn’t populate. I have confirmed it is not saving changes to the database either.

When I save to another of my show’s feeds, the information processes as it’s supposed to – in the same post. This has been happening only since 3/16/2021 and only seems to affect this one feed. I can go into MySQL and add the entries myself, I know, but I’d rather get to the bottom of this.

Do you have any idea how one particular feed could be impacted by this bug, and not others? And did recent updates/”fixes” have something to do with this, perhaps?

    Hi craiggroshek,

Troubleshooting issues with private/premium feeds is difficult, and there’s not much Blubrry can do there. Regardless, these two support documents offer some general suggestions that may be helpful:

Hey, there. Thanks for the reply, Shawn. I wanted to let you know that although I don’t know why the issue is happening, I did find a solution. So, I have a lot of premium podcast feeds, as I have a separate feed for each program we feature in our subscription Patrons Area.

For every podcast feed that exists, an entry box section is created on the Posts, and this is where I enter the URL for the respective audio/episode.

I have a plugin that allows me to change the order in which these entry boxes appear, along with other WordPress blocks (i.e. revisions, comments, redirects, etc.)

I realized today that saves were transferring to the database for most of the podcast feeds / entry boxes, but not The Town Whispers, which was dragged and dropped to be one of the lower positions on the page.

I experimented and moved the box for The Town Whispers up closer to the top, and lo and behold, the change took without incident. However, if I input anything in any of the entry boxes toward the bottom, it wouldn’t save it. So it appears the position the entry boxes occupy on the Post boxes order impacts whether or not the info input is saved.

Would this potentially be an issue with Blubrry, in that there is a limit on the number of entry boxes one can have, that would impact saving capabilities on-screen? And would this have been overlooked as most people don’t have as many programs/series as I do?

Or could this be related to another WordPress issue?

    Hi craiggroshek,

PowerPress has a feature called Custom Podcast Channels that allows for multiple podcast RSS feed to be generated thru a single WordPress site. That site works by creating individual Podcast Episode boxes for each podcast RSS feed. I’ve seen some installations that have around ten different Custom Podcast Channels and corresponding Podcast Episode boxes. All of the Podcast Channels work, regardless of what order they’re in. Based on that, I don’t think the behavior you’ve described is due to a limitation of PowerPress.

Hey @shawnogordo, he is using podcast channels to have multiple podcasts and multiple podcast episode boxes.

@craiggroshek, PowerPress 8.0 changed how we manage episode fields. In the past versions you had to enable the field to see it in the episode box. Since 8.0, we put all the fields and now you have to do the reverse, remove the fields so they do not appear. With that said, when you have multiple podcast episode boxes, you are increasing the number of input fields by that number. For example if you have 10 private shows, you now have 11 times as many fields as a single podcast website. As you noted, only the episode box at the top is getting saved, the others are not, and it is because of the large quantity of input fields exceeds what your server can handle. To fix, you will need to limit the number of fields in the episode entry box. To do this, click the gear icon to the top right corner of one of the episode boxes. Here you can remove fields that you do not use. In your case you may wan t to be quite aggressive and disable all of the advanced fields, then also disable most of the settings “Episode Entry box”. Once you get the field count down, save the blog post once, go back to the posts page and then click ‘edit’ to edit the episode again, it should now let you update the remaining private episodes all the way down.

    Thanks,
    Angelo
