• My nav menu (using the twentyten theme) has 45 items, and when I make a change and hit “save menu,” 9 times out of 10 the save fails and crashes with a 500 error. All the menu items are pages or external links. What could be wrong?

  • Same problem for me I think. Looks like there is a bug that is being examined (?) – but is there a fix, now?

    I’ve had the problem re-occur (I changed servers within the same ISP). Worrying and I lost half the extensive and quite complicated menu structure. Luckily I was able to Restore from a database Backup, although I had to go back some days before I got one that full restored the menu (why would that be?).
    Anyway, I got my ISP to follow the advice given in the ‘trac’ system, viz.

    "I just asked them to set the following two values in PHP.
        suhosin.post.max_vars = 5000
        suhosin.request.max_vars = 5000 "

    and this has worked extremely well, seeming to solve the problem and also making saving much faster too.

    It’s not so good that what should be a straightforward menu system should need such serious heavy engineering work, is it?

    I read the track in the programmers’ forum and just want to add my two cents to urge that this issue be given a high priority. I’ve wasted several hours of my time and a bit of GoDaddy’s tech support time trying to update my menu structure past about 20 items. So long as this limitation exists, WP isn’t going to be much use for anything bigger than kiddie websites, unless the site builder has the patience to track down the numerous bug threads about this issue here and find the “suhosin” fix and persuade their ISP to implement it (assuming it works, which I don’t know yet).

    I contacted GoDaddy.com tech support with the suhosin fix in NickSTrong’s post and they replied that this is something I should add to my php.ini file. Did that. No change. Still crashing.

    I’m only one degree on from an ignoramus, but there are two things here, I think. One is a memory/timeout setting that one can change in ‘accessible’ files like php.ini – sorry, I do not know if that’s the one I mean.
    The other is the suhosin thing, which is an ISP control. So I think GoDaddy’s chap is wrong.
    For what it’s worth, menu updating also appears to need a good strong connection. I’m on mobile broadband in France and if the signal is weak I have problems updating menu items.

    I did add all the memory and timeout settings that have been mentioned in several posts on this topic to the php.ini file. I’ve posted the php.ini file in various locations — site root, wp root, wp-admin … with no discernible effect.

    I’ll get back to the GD techy about the suhosin thing; I agree that it’s a server-side thing.

    I have a very good broadband connection here. The menu problems start when the number of menu items hits 30 or so. I’ve managed to work around it somewhat by using a secondary menu for some of my items, but the site is far from finished and this continues to be a major headache and time suck.
