    I also tried adding a completely different widget to my custom widget area: that seems to work fine.

    I’m not able to reproduce your problem. Is your issue still current?
    If so could you provide a summary of what you’re trying to do and state any error message. The more information we get the better the chances are we can resolve the issue.
