Save or retrieve attachment id instead of attachment url

When using a custom field for images (from the library) is it possible (maybe with an undocumented option) to save the attachment id and not the attachment url in the database? Or other possibility: retrieve the attachment id and not the url when using
get_post_meta($post_id,'_my_image',1);?
I’d like to show a thumbnail of the image in the custom post types admin table and haven’t found an easy way to fetch it using the image url.
Any help or advise much appreciated. Thanks in advance!
