‘Save and Return’ link or button?

In the admin system, I want to have a ‘Save and Return’ link or button

When this is clicked, the current item being edited gets saved and you then get taken to the actual item you were editing

Is there something that exists with this functionality?

I would assume such a function would be easy to write – but can I do so without effecting any of the core code – so that any future updates won’t over write my changes/additions?
