Is there any way I can use the same SKU on different product variations?

I realise usually this wouldn’t be a good idea, but in my application it makes sense.

I’m working on a site which sells a small range of unisex shoes in European sizing. I need the following variations for example:

    Mens (Size 39)
    Mens (Size 40)
    Mens (Size 41)
    Mens (Size 42)
    Mens (Size 43)
    Mens (Size 44)
    Womens (Size 38)
    Womens (Size 39)
    Womens (Size 40)
    Womens (Size 41)

The problem is that a Mens 39, 40 and 41 is actually the same as a Womens 39, 40 and 41 respectively, but as the SKU has to be unique I can’t use the same SKU for a Mens 39 and Womans 39 even though it is the same product.

Is there any way around that?

You can have SKU for the variable product, so applies for all variations.
Still in your case you can create a variation like “Mens (Size 39, 40 or 41)”.

Thanks Claudio, but that’s not quite what I need.

Each variation should have it’s own SKU, and the dropdown for variations should appear like this:

    Mens (Size 39)
    Mens (Size 40)
    Mens (Size 41)
    Mens (Size 42)
    Mens (Size 43)
    Mens (Size 44)
    Womens (Size 38)
    Womens (Size 39)
    Womens (Size 40)
    Womens (Size 41)

I DON’T want to have something like this, it wouldn’t be logical:

Mens (Size 39), Womens (Size 39)
Mens (Size 40), Womens (Size 40)
Mens (Size 41), Womens (Size 41)
    Mens (Size 42)
    Mens (Size 43)
    Mens (Size 44)
    Womens (Size 38)

    I hope I’ve made myself clearer ??

This isn’t going to work. You need to also remember if you’re enabling stock, those 2 SKUS would have separate stock levels, not the same.

Thanks Mike, so there’s no way around it? There’s no way to create an ‘alias’ variation or something?

No not in core I’m afraid. Maybe with a custom solution but nothing I can code up here.

OK, thanks for the advice Mike
