• I’m wondering if updating automatically from version 2.7 to the latest one will have any effects?
Of course a back up it is necessary no matter what, but is there a specific issue I should worry about? The site is using this theme which will be changed ( WordPress Classic. The original WordPress theme that graced versions 1.2.x and prior.) after the update.

What should I worry about? Theme compatibility ?

As you have such an old version of WordPress, you will need to carry out a series of smaller manual upgrades. See Upgrading_WordPress_Extended for the full details.

Your existing theme (Classic) will also not be compatible with the current version of WordPress but you could try either the 2010, 2011 or 2013 themes instead.

I think I will back up articles, users, pages and create a new installation in a subfolder. Build the new website and then import all that in there.
To avoid playing with a live site … do you think this is a good strategy/approach @esmi ?

Yep – that could work. ??

I guess you also suggest to use the same database as earlier or create a fresh one and simply import the xml file with the posts and pages?

If it was me, I’d create a fresh database for the new site.
