Safari preview incorrect

Upload this dummy image as a favicon to the plugin via WordPress:
Leave all the fields as per default (other than that annoying app name!). Note the Safari preview looks good, with the line in the middle.
Create the favicon. In WordPress, the preview image for Safari will show the image high up the top – not nicely vertically centered.
Seems to strip out the transparent part.
