• I run WordPress in a RedHat9.0 server and use a Mac (OS X 10.3 and Safari) to access the administration section of WP. I don’t intend to write in my blog in English. I will rather use portuguese which contains characters like ??, ??, ?§, etc., etc.
Unfortunately I can’t input such characters in some input boxes (categories, title, …) with Safari. If I use IE for Mac or indeed IE for Windows, everything is OK.
Curiously, the same happens when I try to write such characters in the ‘New topic’ box, when trying to post in the forum.
Last thing… I don’t know if it’s related but my Mac OS X is in American English and my keybord layout is international US.
    Any ideas or solutions?
    Thanks,
    Tiago

  • Hmmm… if your keyboard in US how did you type those Portuguese characters above???

Soory, forgot to tell… In Mac OS when you type command(apple key)+e you get this: ?′. Similarly if you press command+c you get ?§, and so on, and so on…

OK, I got it. (Same people, who are lazy to install more languages on Win boxes, do something similar when they need non-English characters ??
Regarding your initial question: it seems to be a shortcoming of Safari, so you should probably ask them.
For years now I simply refuse to use any software that is “ethnocentric” – i.e. doesn’t let me to do whatever I want in my preferred langauges and characters other than iso-8859-1.

That’s also not the problem because I can input such characters in other sites (even in one line boxes)… I think it might be a particular lack of compatibility between Safari and WP, i don’t know…

What about Safari’s support for utf-8? or maybe it’s a thing of settings… just thinking aloud ??

I have no problem displaying special characters in my WP blog when I view it with Safari. Using Safari 1.2.3 (v125.9), OS X 10.3.5, all recent updates, blog encoded with utf-8. P.S. I think you meant, option-e, option-c, etc. Command-e does nothing and command-c copies. ^_-

    You’re right is option-e… My mistake. ??
The problem is to input special characters in the input boxes, such as e.g. title or categories. When I press option-e, for instance, the character ?′appears briefly and then disappears…
However, in the post box I can write those characters…

I’m having no trouble entering special characters anywhere. However, I type fast and enter the letter almost immediately after the option-letter combo.

I have had problems with japanese characters in the small input boxes recently, I cant help with this problem but I can relate to the issue.
with the Japanese input typing ma will automatically change to ???, I too type fast enough to do this, but, to convert a word to kanji the input method keeps the characters highlighted as I type, then at the end of the word pressing space bar will bring up a list of kanji options to choose from. in some sites, noticably wordpress for me too, it is not possible as by the 3rd or 4th character the highlight disappears.
I don’t know if it is specifically a wordpress issue, I have seen it on a couple of sites before, but I have also been able to use Japanese input in the same form of input fields in many other sites too.

Ah, asian characters are a bit out of my league. Sorry about that.
