• Hi – I’m having recurring issues with S2 Member. I’m not sure if it is related to the KLEO theme I am now using. People who purchase are not receiving their registration email, even though the Email Log is saying it has been sent. Please see below the log I have of the most recent transaction where the registration email was sent but not received. I’m thinking this might be the problem – [6] => Skipping this IPN response, for now. The Subscr. ID is not associated with a registered Member.

  • @abbie, I suspect the problem lies with neither s2Member nor the Kleo theme, but with your host. Who is your host?

    I’d suggest troubleshooting by using the Postman SMTP plugin, or else change your host.

    I’ve just been speaking to my host which is HostGator. They have no record of receiving the email and think it may be a script error. Possibly a plug in issue although I have testing this. The problem is, when I send test emails they work and are sent (so unlikely a host error) but when someone registers and pays via PayPal with S2Member this where the problem occurs.

    At this stage I’m thinking of changing from S2Member altogether and moving to MemberPress.

    Any other thoughts would be appreciated.

    It’s nothing to do with s2Member. The problem is with your host.

    It’s up to you whether to change to MemberPress (that plugin is useless for me but your needs may be different) but, either way, I’d certainly leave HostGator and move to a decent host.

    Thanks. I’ve been using HostGator for years and haven’t had very many issues. Based on the log file above, what should I be saying to HostGator? I’ve sent them the exact same log file and they suggest a scripting issue. If you don’t believe it is, what do you think is going wrong at a hosting level? Thanks.

    Years ago, HostGator was very good. Then the founder sold to EIG, which buys up hosts with strong reputations and trades on them while depleting the service. Their response to you is an example of this. It’s really just a fob-off because they probably just haven’t a clue what the problem is.

    The problem almost certainly lies with the wp_mail function, which is a core WordPress function but which is known to be unreliable with many hosts. The plugin I mentioned at the beginning is your best bet for identifying and resolving the problem. It will try to create a method of sending emails using SMTP instead.

    If it can’t, you will have problems with email irrespective of what plugins you use, and you should just make things easier for yourself and move. Choose a managed host that specializes in WordPress, who will understand such things as problems with wp_mail. There are several such hosts that are very inexpensive, and many hosts have SMTP built-in to their setups.

    That’s great information. Thank you. I have been using Easy WP SMTP but sounds like I need to look at the Postman SMTP plugin you suggest. I’ve also disabled a few plugins again to see if that helps. Out of curiosity, which host(s) do you recommend?

    In the US, which is where I am, I strongly recommend Lightning Base, who I’m with, and Little Bizzy. In Europe, I’ve heard very good things about Siteground.

    I see you’re in Australia, and I don’t know any Aussie hosts, so you might need to do some research.

    Thanks so much for all your help! I really appreciate it. I’ve just downloaded Postman SMTP and thing seem to be working. However, I will be waiting for a new paying member before I feel confident everything is all ok. I’ll update how I go.
