I was wondering if anyone was having issues with s1.wp.com slowing any sites. https://madomains.com is the site I have had issues with but not michaelalbany.com, zhounder.com or any other client sites. Just the one.

The only plugin that is on the madomains not on the others is “Quick Page/Post Redirect Plugin” which is recommended by GoDaddy for a resellers site.

I disabled Jetpack and the issue stopped. With Jetpack active load times were in the area of 1-15 seconds but when I disabled it the site loads completely in 4-6 seconds. I had someone monitoring the server and they saw that the hang was coming from s1.wp.com and hence why I tried disabling Jetpack.

I have seen a few posts about this issue that are at least 6 moths old but none have the resolution listed. The posts are just marked Resolved.

    Can anyone give some direction?

    Thanks!

    Michael

    Jetpack Mechanic ??

s1.wp.com is indeed a WordPress.com domain. It’s used to serve images from our Content Delivery Network (CDN) when the Photon module is active. Since the CDN servers are all over the world, loading time from these servers should actually be good, if not better than your own server.

It might be worth using services like Google Pagespeed Insights or Pingdom to see if the s1.wp.com loading issues you experienced are global, or only happening on your network.

At the moment, Google Pagespeed Insights report issues with your own server response times:
    https://i.wpne.ws/TBWj

That might be why your site is slow.

    I hope this helps.

Jeremy – It is true the site is slow today. However if I activate jetpack it becomes at least twice as slow and I do not use CDN so why would it even call to it? Unless JP is automatically calling to CDN in the background it WP shouldn’t even think about it.

Do I need to specifically turn it off?

And, I will not use CDN. As a photographer (even though this site is not for my photography) I have to be extra careful on where my images are stored and how they are accessed.

You do indeed need to to deactivate the Photon module if you do not want to use it. You can follow the instructions here to learn how to deactivate a Jetpack module:
    https://jetpack.me/support/activate-and-deactivate-modules/

You will also want to deactivate the Tiled Galleries module, as they also rely on Photon to resize your images on the fly.

    Jeremy,

I disabled all of jetpack and that fixed most of the problem but not all and that I am taking up with my hosting company.

The odd thing is that Photon was never enabled so why would it call at all? Odd.

    Thanks for your help!

As I mentioned earlier, Tiled Galleries also use Photon so you’d need to deactivate both Photon and the Tiled Galleries module to remove all Photon references from your site.
