• I am redesigning a website that is currently done in Flash:AS3 and need to be able to design the sight while keeping the current site live. The client has already purchased hosting from godaddy and wants to keep it.

I have installed WP into a subdirectory already. The directory looks like this:
    webroot
    Apache Logs
    .errordocs
    Scripts
    _root
    subdomain

The subdomain folder is where I installed WP. The problem I’m having is after following these steps (Pointing your home site’s URL to a subdirectory), when I type in the domain https://www.thecleanersrock.com (the original domain) it shows the wordpress template site. and when I go to https://www.thecleanersrock.com/subdomain and error comes up saying “Failed opening required ‘./subdomain/wp-blog-header.php'”

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I am new to WP so that is probably the biggest problem. lol
    Thank You!

  • Did you setup subdomain name so it points to subdomian folder

    Try this https://subdomain.thecleanersrock.com/

Subdomains go before the TLD (top level domain) – hence ‘sub’ ??

Your host uses a DNS entry to point the subdomain to the subfolder where you should install WordPress.

    oops, my bad.

When I named the sub-directory folder it was a typo. I actually don’t have a sub-DOMAIN, that is just what the folder is called. The original domain name(URL) is https://www.thecleanersrock.com

so in the FTP Cpanel, the webroot folder is top level. then all the others are inside that there. WP is installed inside the (typo)subdomain folder. meant for it to be subdirectory.

hope that wasn’t too confusing. haha

Ok, well I have no idea what I did wrong before but I uninstalled WP and deleted the “subdomain” folder and re-installed WP in a new folder “subdirectory” and it all works fine now.

Must be the folder name matters?

Thank you both for your advice. I will send the link when it is done if you want to take a look.

Thank you again. It is very much appreciated.

I also just installed WordPress site to sub folder and all is working ok, it behaves like it’s in the root.

However, it seems that Google has indexed some pages already and they show that sub folder in the url. Is this only leftover from the previous stage when the site was developed in the sub, or is it going to be like this in the future also?

Is there any negative effects for SEO if the site is running from the sub folder?

Your going to want to get a redirect plugin such as Quick Page/Post Redirect Plugin

While developing goto settings > reading > and check off “Discourage search engines from indexing this site”. Moving stuff around, unfinished pages, etc. are definately NOT good for SEO. I also use WP Maintenance Mode while working on sites.

Subfolders and Subdomains are two different things. I use subdomains for developing and testing such as “develop.domain.com” and “sandbox.domain.com” ??
