• I’ve installed WP2.3 rc1 in the root alongside an existing html website which uses index.html as the default page.

I’ve begun pasting the content of the existing site into WP but when I try to view the WP site, WP reverts back to the index.html of the existing site.

It does this even if I type https://www.the site name/index.php.

In other words, I can’t see the WP version of the site because WP keeps kicking me back to the html version of the site.

Is there a way for me to run the existing site and also view the WP site while I am converting the existing content into WP?

    Thanks!

  • It is probably easiest to install th WP site into a subdomain.

Copy all the content in from your old site and backup your database and then when you are finished we can guide you through the transfer to the root procedure.

OK. Thanks! I’ll do that. I’ve done it that way before but I thought I’d give it a shot this way since the original site is straight HTML.

Why does WP not just ignore the old site? Just curious.

It’s more about how your web server is configured.

Will it default to index.php or index.html first?

WP needs it to be index.php first or it won’t function correctly. However, if you want to be showing the old site, then you don’t want index.php first.

I understand. I’ll simply rebuild the site in WP in a subdirectory then move it when done.

    Thanks!
