• I have an RSS feed link in my sidebar. I’m not all that familiar with RSS setup so when I click on it it shows a ton of code on the screen.

    1. Is that normal? Is it supposed to “talk” to a RSS app the visitor has?

    2. Additionally, should I make an account with some RSS feeds in order for others to find me?

    3. What is Feedburner? Is that something I need to have?

Again, I know what RSS is, but not all that sure about setting it up.

    Thanks!
    Brad

  • I’m so used to looking at RSS feeds they look like plain English to me anymore<GRIN>.

The RSS Feed is for a ‘feed reader’ program to make use of. The feed reader will import your posts or snippets of your posts into a screen for reading by some of your fans without them having to stay on your website.

Not everyone likes those ‘readers’ but some people love them.

The RSS feed is also used by some content aggregators to import snippets of your post to their site to provide their visitors with a bit of your content and a link to where they can ‘Read More’ by visiting your website.

The Search engines may spider your RSS feeds to build their crawl list.

I make use of RSS feeds quite often during troubleshooting.

So my advice to you would be to keep your RSS feed. Keep the link to your feed prominent… the icon with the link where you have it is fine.

You might want to set your feed to summary. That’s in…

    Dashboard –> Settings –> Reading

and then it is ‘For each post in a feed, include’ where you’ll check ‘summary’ instead of full feed. That will bring people using a feed reader back to your website to see the rest of any articles that catch their eye.

Feedburner is an RSS feed reader and handler that you might implement on your website to further enhance your RSS feeds but WordPress does a fantastic job providing feeds already. Unless your audience requests Feed Burner I recommend just staying with what you have.

Thanks so much, really. Much appreciated! You’ve answered everything. Just a couple more things:

    1. Is it at all advantageous to create profiles on any of the more popular readers such as Feedly or Bloglovin?

    2. Should I create a link to the WordPress Reader?

    Thanks!

It’s usually a great thing to have your site mentioned elsewhere so if you want to do so then go for it.

Imagine finding just one person there at one of those other outlets who loves your site and mentions it quite often… that could make a world of difference.

I was looking at your site the other evening and was impressed with some of the ‘down to earth’ advice and ideas for working out in less than ideal circumstances.

There was a picture of you working out with some weights and a 2 x 6 under your feet… That’s timely right now!!!

Thanks for the kind words. Yeah, I try to write stuff I’ve experienced.

I’m just wondering if RSS (and creating profiles on big ones) is really the place for fitness stuff though.

I’m staying away from the big outlets like Facebook and such (for many reasons).

I’m also wondering if Medium.com is worth syndicating on…?

Thanks for answering all my questions! ??
