My RSS feed has stopped working with outside apps, such as FeedBurner and reader apps.

Odd thing is, when you visit it directly it works fine. But other applications get a “page not found” message.

This began after I upgraded to 3.0.1 but I don’t know for sure if this was the cause…it may have started a couple of days later. I attempted deactivating every plugin, but that didn’t help.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks!

Can you provide a link to your blog so we can investigate?

That is definitely a problem. The /feed/ portion is controlled by the permalink system, so try re-saving your permalink structure at Settings/Permalinks in your admin panel. If WordPress cannot automatically edit the .htaccess file, it will provide manual instructions after saving.

Thanks for your quick reply…sadly, that didn’t work.

Try deactivating all plugins. If that resolves the issue, reactivate each one individually until you find the cause.

If that does not resolve the issue, try switching to the Default theme (WordPress 1.5 – 2.9.2) or the Twenty Ten theme (WordPress 3.0 and higher) to rule-out a theme-specific issue (themes can affect feeds).

Thanks for the advice. Deactivated all the plugins, switched theme to Twenty Ten and still no luck. Any other ideas? Maybe a corrupted file somewhere?

File corruption would definitely be my next guess. Try downloading WordPress again and delete then replace your copies of everything except the wp-config.php file and the /wp-content/ directory with fresh copies from the download.

Sadly no success on this front either. Reinstalled, no luck.

I know RSS can sometimes be temperamental with odd characters. Any chance that might be breaking the feed?

    Any other possibilities?

Go to Settings/Permalinks in your admin panel and set it to the default structure. Then, access your server via FTP or SFTP and rename the .htaccess file.

Now, see if your feed loads properly at https://nycaviation.com/index.php?feed=rss2

Fixed! Turned out it was an .htaccess issue…

Seems that a recent update of the W3 Total Cache plugin might have messed it up. It added a ton of code to my .htaccess file, which remains even after the plugin is removed.

Anyway, I removed “xml” from the file types being cached and that seemed to do the trick.

    Thanks for your help!
