Hi, I’m fairly new to wordpress and I have been searching the web for a couple of days as I’m trying to get an RSS widget to work on a clients website but the hosting company has a loopback connection prohibition on all the servers.

Does anyone know of away to display RSS in a widget using server path instead of URL?

Currently using theme twenty ten as the client like the clear layout of the theme. The silly thing is WP has already generated the feed and can be seen by typing in the direct url or pressing the RSS button on the browser.

    Thanks in advance

  • You’re trying to display the site’s own RSS feed on the same site?

    Hi esmi, Yes I am,
I have tried the RSS widget included in the theme and when I enter the url of the RSS it can not connect due to the server loopback prohibition.

    Yes I am

In that case I loudly applaud your hosts’ prohibition. What you are attempting to do would create a serious loopback with consequent performance issues for your site and possibly its server.

Why on earth would you want to display the site’s RSS feed when you have access to all of he site’s Posts & pages?

This is where being a WP newbie comes in..
What the client wants is a widget or text box to display the latest news (RSS) to one side of the page so it does not matter what page they land on they can always see the latest news feed.
Seems odd to me as I would just go for a latest news page, and announce the RSS feed is available to visitors

Is the site using a static front page?

It’s using a static front page,
<a href=”https://www.cherwellclt.org.uk it’s still in work in progress state but they made move to go live to start getting information available.

OK that was meat to show a link https://www.cherwellclt.org.uk

Is there not a plugin for this?

    Hi investinmilokcs
I have been looking for over a day to try and find something, but I may be going totally in the wrong direction as pointed out by esmi

It’s using a static front page

Then which page did you define as the main posts’ page in Settings -> Reading?

err that could be the problem,
the main posts page is not defined

If you do that, you’ll have a whole pre-generated page of “news” posts. ??

OK that would be a great start, now for a newbie who has just realised I have tried to make a page in the menu, from a categories setting (latest news).
What is the best way to make it fit together as I have used the post categories to show new interesting information and become part of the RSS against the normal static pages.

Have I completely misunderstood how WP works?

Is the latest news spread across all of these categories?

Not sure if this will make sense, but what they have is events which go on the events page and I have said if they create them as posts they will appear in the RSS feed. When creating them if they mark the categories section as latest news it will appear on the latest news page as well.
The rest of the menu items all point to static pages currently.
But moving forward all new content would be added as a post as it would only be updating current information.
    Hope that made sense
