I’m getting the following error under “Incoming Links” in the dashboard:

Warning: file_get_contents(http:) [function.file-get-contents]: failed to open stream: No such file or directory in /hermes/web01/b1546/moo.iechefs/wp-includes/class-feed.php on line 88

RSS Error: file_get_contents could not read the file

however, when I manually go to the /feed/ folder or the /comments/feed/ folder I get the standard page which offers to put RSS on my Google homepage or Google feed reader. So I don’t see what the problem is.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

  • First, check via FTP whether that file is actually on your server in this location:

    /hermes/web01/b1546/moo.iechefs/wp-includes/class-feed.php

If the file is there, check its permissions and make sure they are set to 644.

If the file is not there, go into a fresh copy of WP 3.2.1 and re-upload the file to the right location.

That error means that your server was unable to retrieve the feed from Google to see what links you have incoming. This is an ignorable problem since the list is pretty meaningless in the grand scheme of things, really. It’s possible that your server is firewalled and unable to reach Google for some reason, or it’s possible that Google was just temporarily buggered up.

See if it clears up on its own after a while. If it doesn’t, and if you care about the incoming links, then you’ll need to work out why your server can’t talk to Google.

iechefs – please ignore my best-guess of a response and go with Otto’s – he’s da man. ??

Otto and zoonini, Thank you both. The funny thing is that I clicked on the RSS button and am receiving RSS on my Google homepage.

Since this is set up as mainly a static website, there aren’t many blogs, only pages. But I wrote one blog as a test, and it went to my Google home page without any drama.

Maybe the problem occurred when I clicked on the RSS button before I actually had any posts.

The /hermes/web01/b1546/moo.iechefs/wp-includes/class-feed.php file is there. Line 88 is almost at the end of the file.

I guess this won’t matter at all since we are not using posts on this installation. I removed the two practice posts. This is now a completely static website using only pages. We have different WordPress installation in a /blog/ sub-directory for doing blogs.
