• Unless you enter everything PERFECTLY your very first try, this plugin will destroy your site. I changed a capability – but deleted capabiltiies are not actually deleted. They stay in your database and can’t be deleted unless you dig into php and do that yourself. No way to re-set. So as mentioned, if you make a single error or change, it is permanenet. And then capabiltiies start interfering with each other.

Support forum is useless, been waiting weeks for a response. Also – some capabilties don’t show up and must be manually added, which means you need to search the plugin site (like WPML) and then add these capabilties in directly. If they are not there, even an admin will be blocked from using plugins because they are not assigned in the capabiltiy manager.

Proceed with caution – this plugin causes way more harm than good, and support is non-existent.

Custom capabilities can be removed from the database by removing them from all roles, including the Administrator role.

You will find support to be more responsive now that the plugin is maintained by a larger team with a more well-defined funding model.

For anyone wondering about the points raised in this review:

    1. Capabilities are dropped from the checkbox array by deselecting from every role.
    2. A Backup Tool is available at Tools > Capability Manager (also linked from Role and Capabilities screen).
    3. Backup Tool can restore role capabilities to their configuration at the time of CME plugin activation.
    4. Backup Tool can restore role capabilities to your last manual backup.
    5. To reset to default WordPress capabilities (not generally recommended), click “Reset to WordPress defaults.”
    6. Capability settings are not permanent. They can be added or removed through checkbox selection.
    7. CME is mainly a role editor that can also be used to impose type-specific capability requirements. It is not ultimately responsible for applying capability checks. If capabilities interfere with each other, there is either a misunderstanding or an issue with the code applying the capability checks.
    8. Supporting this plugin for free for 7 years, it was sometimes hard to deliver prompt support. You will find support much faster now, under PublishPress ownership.
    9. The “Add Capability” box provides an easy way to add custom capabilities used by other plugins (and known only within their code). It is not reasonable to expect CME to define checkboxes for all your plugins’ custom capabilities in advance. No role editor is going to do that.
