Root directory not writable when updating permalinks

  • I have an old website done on Joomla and a newly configured WordPress to replace it, at the standard directory /wordpress/. I went to change permalinks and got the “If the root directory of your site were writable, we could do this automatically, but it isn’t so…” message. Everything appears to have correct file permissions.

    The WordPress URL is at https://www.site.com/wordpress/
    The site URL is currently at https://www.site.com/wordpress/, although I will be changing to https://www.site.com and copying the index.php and .htaccess files into the root directory.

    Is this just a matter of copying the index.php and .htaccess files into the root directory to overwrite the existing files from the Joomla setup?
