• Hi

I am using the Rookie theme with Sportspress for a junior badminton club and yesterday we noticed that the menus don’t work very well on mobile devices.

We have some top level menus, with sub-menus underneath and it is impossible on a mobile device to drill down to the sub-menu, as tapping the top level menu immediately opens the associated page/post, rather than expanding the sub-menu.

On a PC, if I reduce the browser window to mobile size, the sub-menus are expanded when the mouse hovers over the top level menu. However, this obviously doesn’t work on mobile devices.

Does anyone have a suggestion or work-around to get the menu working as expected on mobile devices?

    Hi!

    Thanks for reaching out!

Unfortunately since mobile browsers don’t have hover events it’s hard to have a simple solution for this (that doesn’t involve JS code). The easiest way to change that is simply adding all sub-items in the main menu and hiding them for desktops, this way only mobiles will have this complete menu.

    Thanks!

We tackled the same problem on our site and, for us, the solution was to point our top level menu items to blank (#) links.

This lets us drill down on both mouse-driven and touch screen without any additional configuration or JavaScript.

Thanks – I will try the approach suggested by @jtmarcot which sounds like a simple work-around.

    Hi @jtmarcot

Thanks for the help! Indeed that’s what we usually recommend.

I hope this works for you.

I’ve sent this to our dev team already and they are considering our options to change that.

    Thanks!

    Kind Regards,
