Sometime last year, something changed (I presume a WP or theme update) and the colour options available under the rich text editing > highlight menu are now severely restricted. I used to be able to select from a basic but useable palette of red/green/blue/yellow etc and now there’s just two shades of grey, a teal and black or white.

Where would I start looking to try and figure out what’s changed and how to revert it back to how it used to be?

  • Hi, @nixonyx

Can you show a screenshot(s) with the color options you currently have? What is the link to your website?

I found how to fix it, a file called theme.json appeared in December and had a very strange and limited set of colours in it. I have no idea why anyone would restrict the palette so severely but I presume the people behind the theme have a reason.

By replacing the entries with my own palette, I was able to restore the colours I used to have (plus add a few more).

I have now turned off auto updates on the theme.

I did try to add an image of the palette but seems it was necessary to first upload it somewhere and attach it as a URL and I didn’t have time to mess about with that. Not sure why a link to my website is needed as it wouldn’t have illustrated the issue – I would never have published a page that wasn’t correctly formatted.

@nixonyx You’re right; some colors disappeared from the palette after adding the theme.json file to the theme. However, adding this file to the theme unlocks many new customization options in the block editor, such as editing margins, padding, borders, etc. Without this file, this wasn’t possible.

I also found a free and simple plugin that you can use to customize your palette so you can keep your theme updated in the future:

I tested it, and it works fine. You can find it in Settings > Editor Colors – https://d.pr/i/TVHStn
