Recently (just a few days ago), my rich text editor on WP stopped working. Now it’s just the basic editor that shows up. As far as I know, I haven’t changed any options that might affect this (all the right boxes are checked and so on), so I have no idea why the rich text editor would not show up. This problem shows up in both Firefox 2 and IE7, so it must be something with my copy of WP. A plugin perhaps? Any help would be great because I miss my rich text…

  • FIXED IT!

I edited the file wp-includes/functions.php, line 336 in the function gzip_compression(). I merely commented out the line ob_start('ob_gzhandler');. I think I disabled gzip compression, but right now I don’t care, my tinyMCE works!

I hope someone will fix the code properly some day.

simsen, are you sure the problem went away permanently?

I just commented the same line, then refreshed my edit page multiple times. Sometimes the visual buttons appeared, sometimes not.

Can you please try refreshing your edit window a bunch of times (say, 10 or 20) with and without that gzip line disabled and less us know if it really did fix the problem 100% for you?

    Thanks!

tripecac, I have now refreshed my browser seven or eight times, and it works flawlessly.

But this is strange: if I activate the line ob_start('ob_gzhandler');, the editor still works. It did not work before.

Additionally, commenting out ob_start resolves a different problem I have in Firefox when using Google Toolbar. That problem is described in this thread: WordPress files download when I click links

Oddly enough, I finally got my problem to go away by switching to another server. I never was able to fix things on my old installation.

I read through this thread while having the same problem in 2.3.1

HOWEVER, I had this problem, but never used much of the software anyone listed above. So it left me puzzled.

I did a mostly basic upgrade from a lower version to 2.3.1 via the “WordPress Automatic Upgrade” plugin version 0.8 by Keith Dsouza.

Once the upgrade was done, I noticed the WYSIWYG (Rich Text Editor) bar was missing from my Write Posts section.

After reading this thread until now, I still did not get my issue fixed.

    THE FIX:
If you also have the “WordPress Automatic Upgrade” plugin, then disable it, and check to see if your Rich Text Editor bar re-appears. This was the case for me. My problem is now solved.
