    Hi there,

I have configured Paypal for Woocommerce 1.1.7.5 using my Sandbox API account. When I complete the PayPal step and return to the Review Order page, there is no Order Notes field – in fact the 2nd column box is blank/empty.

Order Notes are essential for my business. I can see other posts here about notes not persisting in older versions – so I believe the field should be present.

    What am I doing wrong?

    Thanks,
    Jason

When using Express Checkout from the product details page or the cart page the user would enter the notes on the PayPal Express Checkout page. As such, the review page is not meant to have a notes entry field on it.

That part has been working fine, but we did have a bug where if the user did go through the WooCommerce checkout page and enter notes there, but used Express, then those notes weren’t carrying through. We have that fixed already in the release branch on GitHub and that will be included in the 1.1.8 update we’ll be releasing before long. You can download that early and update it manually if you’d like to grab it early.

Again, though, if the WC checkout page is skipped then the user would need to fill in their notes on the PayPal Express Checkout pages, and then those notes would be carried back and saved with the order.

Thanks for the clarification & super quick response!

Is it possible to change this behavior? I ask because I sell many customised products, so I pre-fill the Order Note with hints as to what information I need from my customer to complete their order. It is also a mandatory field, ensuring I get input from the customer before they can place an order. Using the PayPal note I can’t do any of that, and will have lots of follow-up emails for missing order information (as I did before implementing the above). Having a note field on the review page would make it work perfectly for me.

Lastly, there is minor a UI bug when using “Set billing address in WooCommerce using the address returned by PayPal”. The billing address gets nested inside the empty div I referred to earlier, plus an additional one, so the styling is double-nested inside two boxes and does not match the shipping address.

    Thanks,
    Jason

I may not fully understand your scenario, but it sounds to me like you would be better suited to add custom attributes and/or variations to your products, and you could include a custom/notes field on the product page so people have to fill out that information while they’re adding the product.

That said, if you want to stick with your current plan we did add some hooks to the plugin so that you can add your own custom fields to the review page. Again, that’s done in the release branch that I linked you to earlier, and will be included in the 1.1.8 update. I still need to document the hooks that we added, but you can review those in the code commit to see what’s available.

Those hooks should allow you to drop your own custom/notes field into the review page.

Thanks again for the fast reply.

Long story short, the Order Note is the best means for me to collect this info (it is wide and varied depending on the customer order).

It appears I saw this functionality in the screenshots of the Skyverge plugin: https://docs.woothemes.com/document/paypal-express-checkout/#section-4

If I used the hooks you refer to, would I be able to integrate to the existing Order Notes field which already displays in a prominent position in the WC Admin Order page? I am happy to give this a shot but may need a little more guidance.

    Cheers,
    Jason

I would need to get one of our devs to take a closer look at exactly how to get that done for you. That would fall outside the scope of what we can offer as free support, though, so for that sort of thing we would need to treat it as a custom, billable project.

Can you private message me a quote and approximate timeline?

Given it is a feature of your nearest competitor and something I would have thought others who sell customised products would need, I’d hope it wouldn’t be too expensive.

    Cheers,
