    Hi there,

since a few days, I get the error message “Bad Escape Sequence In String” in Google Search Console for several of my review blocks, that I created with Ultimate Blocks’ Review block. One example is linked below, if needed I could provide some more.

Those reviews were working fine before, so I am not sure if something in the plugin changed or if Google changed something in the detection of these errors. All reviews are marked as Games/Video Games with UB, as this is matching my content.

As far as I can see in the analysis of GSC, the error is in some cases located in the review body part and in other cases in the description part of the review block.

I have all my reviews in GER and in ENG online and the errors seem to appear only in the English language versions of my reviews since now. All German language versions seem to be okay at the moment.

The number of errors in Google Search Console is growing day by day, so I assume it might belong to all my English reviews, they were just not crawled completely yet. As of now, 27 of my 55 reviews are marked as faulty and as “unparsable structured data”.

Do you have any recommendation, what I can do to solve these problems, or is it a general error in the plugin, that is new? Or is it maybe a long-time problem, that is just newly detected by Google?

    Thanks in advance.

    Greetings,
    Dirk / Zap

Hi @zapzockt! Thanks for letting us know. Our latest update to the plugin caused this issue, and this affects all fields where an apostrophe is part of the input (e.g. “wouldn’t” in your review summary on the page you linked). A workaround for this would be editing the inputs of each review block to remove the apostrophe.

We’ll be including a fix for this in the latest version. However, if you urgently need the fix and/or don’t want to edit the affected blocks, you can do the following:

    1. Download this file and save it under the filename of block.php.
    2. Navigate to your WordPress plugins folder and go to the folder for Ultimate Blocks.
    3. Go to the src/blocks/review folder.
    4. Inside the folder, look for a file named block.php, and rename it into something else (just to make sure you still have the old file when the new one doesn’t work).
    5. Paste the block.php file you downloaded into the folder

Please let us know how it goes.

    Hi @alexius08 ,

Thanks for your answer and the file.

I copied it to the corresponding folder, deleted all the review pages from the cache, started a live preview in GSC, and it seems to be okay now. The re-crawl and test of the former broken files is running, I will reply here again, when it’s done.

    Addendum:

The list of broken reviews in GSC went up from 30 to 40 but a day later down to 13 again. So I am quite sure, that it only needs some more crawling, and it will go down to zero.

So I assume the fix is working. Thanks for your fast reaction, looking forward to the next update. Problem marked as solved.
