Reverting from MU back to Single Instances – Reusing subdomain URLs

I am trying to my MU sites to single installations. I am able to move the content, create new databases, etc., but am having difficulty trying to reuse the MU subdomain URLs. I have deactivated one of my MU sites, and have tried to point my single installation to the old URL/subdomain, but it isn’t working. Instead of accessing the single instance, I am receiving an error that the website has been deactivated.

Is it possible to reuse a subdomain that was once created by WPMU? If I delete or disable my MU site/installation will this resolve the problem?
