Reverse Sort Order

I’d like to display my portfolio items such that the newest item is displayed first. Using the built-in Sort field is difficult because 0 is first, meaning that as the portfolio grows I need to change the Sort numbers on a growing list of items to keep newer ones showing first. Is there a hook/filter I can use to display newer items first or, if not, can I make the Sort items show higher numbered items first rather than lower ones? In that case I’d just add a new, higher number to new items and can leave the older ones alone. Thanks.
