Retrieving Custom Fields Data

Is there a way to retrieve custom fields data?

For instance, the last value added by a user for a given custom field? I think it would be awesome if there was some shortcode like this:

[wlt-custom-field label=”waist” select=”latest”]
[wlt-custom-field label=”waist” select=”first”]

that would search in the database, retrieve the value added to the field called “waist”. The select attribute could be used to choose whether to retrieve the first value added or the last. That was just an idea.
