  • Hi,
I am experiencing a similar problem. The error I get is that when a user goes to complete a quiz, the submission seems to take awhile, and time out. I’ve narrowed it down to being the either my provider (godaddy), or the latest update has thrown a wrench somewhere.

    Greetings Alex,

Thank you for choosing to use this plugin. This is a very strange problem indeed. There has only been one reported issue like this before but it was found to be a plugin conflict. Since you have already tried disabling plugins, that cannot be it this time.

Can you screenshot or tell me how you have the results pages currently set up? How many different pages, score values, content, redirects, etc…

tlecouffe: I do not think your issue is related as you said that you are experiencing a timeout error. Please create your own topic so I can discuss these different issues with each of you.

    Hi Frank,

Right now I have two different pages, one for if the page is between 0 and 4, and the other if the score is between 5 and 6.

I have also tried only using a single page, which doesn’t seem to work either.

I am not using any redirects, and I have 1 picture embedded in the page.

    Thanks,

    Alex

Also, I have tried removing the photo, and I am embedding the quiz in the post using the shortcode.

I’m having the same issues as tlecouffe

Once the answers are filled out and I press “submit”, the page just times out and eventually shows a blank page. Also, the plugin doesn’t show the results for this quiz in the dashboard.

I’ve tried disabling ALL other plugins. Also, I’ve tried switch to the 2015 theme as well. Neither of these has any effect.

Here is a link to the quiz
    https://beyondfearfactor.com/quizzes/

Also, I have results from successfully completed quizzes dated 09/24 which was prior to your latest update. Which leads me to believe it could be this latest plugin update.

I hope this info helps is finding a solution.

    Thanks in advance

    Hi trzl,

Who are you hosting with? I managed to roll back to v.4.2.0 which was a version I initially launched with. I used the WP Rollback plugin and it did the operation without an issue.

I still had one user report a problem after the change, while another seemed to work where it previously did not.

Something is definitely going on though. It’s related to the plugin and/or possibly the provider (I use godaddy right now, and am looking to migrate to see if it makes a difference).

    Hi tlecouffe,

Thanks for the reply. I am using HostGator.

However, I think quizzes that were created before the update, have to be re-created again in order to work. At least that how it seems so far in my initial tests.. Maybe try that and see if it works for you.

I will try that roll back plugin if I run into a dead end with this.

Thanks for the reply. I’ll keep you posted on the results.

    Hi trzl,

When you re-created your quizzes, what was your process? I have a half dozen quizzes with a total of near 1400 questions. I was thinking if that worked, I could go in and update every question with a edit-save vs. a total recreate(?)

    trzl,

I actually just tried your quiz and got this error (in case you hadn’t see it yet)

Fatal error: Maximum execution time of 90 seconds exceeded in /home2/khansen1/public_html/beyondfearfactor.com/wp-content/plugins/quiz-master-next/php/qmn_template_variables.php on line 326

That might be helpful… it’s more than I’m getting with my host. If you figure this one out, pls post ??

    Greetings trzl,

Thank you for choosing to use my plugin! I am sorry that you are experiencing this issue. You are now the second person to report a situation like this. (The first obviously being tlecouffe).

I had originally thought that it might have been the volume of questions that tlecouffe had that might have been the cause of the issue. However, I had set up a massive quiz on a GoDaddy site to test this theory and was unable to re-produce the error.

What makes your case interesting is that you only have a handful of questions so it definitely rules out my theory. That and you are on HostGator. However, the error is what is most interesting. The error tlecouffe listed shows the timeout happening during the variable conversion process. How many emails/results pages do you have set up? Would you be able to post the contents of one of the results pages or emails?

Also, tlecouffe, I do appreciate your assistance with this issue and your patience. I really wish we can figure this out to get it resolved in case anyone else runs into this issue.

    Frank,
I’ve seen other (unrelated plugin) posts that suggest that changing the php_value max_execution_time or updating a php.ini could solve this.

I’ve had a lot of difficulty reproducing this as well, but would you be able to share your settings for this? Perhaps there’s something underlying we can tweak.

The max_execution_time can sometimes be raised to avoid a timeout. However, trzl’s error shows that his is already raised to 90 seconds and still receives the error. I wouldn’t suggest raising it higher than that. Any script that is taking that much resources needs to be altered rather than consume that amount of resources and time.

For my test, I set up my GoDaddy site using the default server settings. I created a quiz with almost everything turned on (timer, pagination, comments, contact info) so I could test with as much resources to try to cause a timeout. I ran a script to auto-generate 150 questions. I then ran a script to auto-magically fill in all answers so I just had to hit submit.

Once I hit submit, it did take a little longer than I would like to give me the results, but I didn’t receive a timeout error. I’ll run another test shortly with more questions so I can test if there is a limit at some-point that I need to work around but I don’t think that it is the amount of questions since trzl’s quiz is only a handful of questions.

    Hey Frank,

Are there any updates? I’m still not sure how to fix my quiz.

    Thanks,

    Alex

When I take the OPs quiz (https://yalerecord.org/2015/09/19/how-is-your-relationship-with-your-hair/) it redirects me back to the quiz page without showing results. Don’t know if this helps.
