Restricting by Member Type or by User Role? Which is best for my concern?

Does this allow you to restrict content by Member Type in BuddyBoss? For example, I am building a website where I teach adult students and child students. I would want the children to be restricted to accessing a small section of child-friendly/course-related groups, whilst allowing the adult students to view and engage in discussion on all topics (from politics to movies and TV shows).

What would be the best way to separate these child students from adult students? Should I just use a User Role for this? Would it be easier to sync this up with other plugins if I do it with User Roles?
