• I’ve been all over these boards recently because I am changing hosts. Previously my problem was not being able to get wordpress installed properly but now I have done that.

I need to move on to getting my wordpress posts/comments back and fear I’ve made a boo-boo.

When changing from the old host I took a full backup of the home directory through FTP (filezilla)

I took a complete back up (gz file) through cpanel back up section and also smaller one (sql file) through MyPhpAdmin.

But what I didn’t do, and didn’t read anywhere that I HAD to do before this all happened, was export my posts and comments and what not THROUGH wordpress. I had no idea I was meant to do that.

So now come time to get those posts back and I can’t through wordpress because it’s asking for a WXR file and I don’t have a WXR file. All I have is what I mentioned above.

Can anyone tell me the best way to get my posts back using the FTP copy of the home dir, the gz file or the sql file??

My web site is dicoverboo.com but it’s just basic right now.

As long as you have a complete database backup, you won’t need the WXR file. Just follow this guide to restore the database:

James I just went to that page.

I have been in this spot before. Where I have wordpress installed and just need to get the posts back.

This is where it all went wrong last time. When I restored my back up following these steps.

On another post someone said I need to have the same version of wordpress but I actually am unsure of the exact version I DID have. All I know is I didn’t do an upgrade for a while (because I always mess it up and end up here for days needing help) My theory being if it isn’t broken, don’t fix it.

When I did this last time it came up with all kinds of fatal errors and I wonder if it’s because the version of wordpress that is installed now is not the same one I had when I was at the other host. Is there a way to find out through my home dir what worpress I had and if yes, can I still download the older versions because I wont have it on my computer anymore.

    Well.

I called my new crappy hosts and tried to get some help from them.

They insisted that all I had to do was use MyPhpAdmin to upload my database back up and it would all just magically appear on the web site.

    I did that.

The only good thing is it hasn’t disabled the site like it did last time. But it hasn’t changed anything either. I am still only getting the wordpress welcome page.

Any idea’s? Am I missing a step here?? Once the database is in, is there magic button I press to make it actually put my posts and comments back up?

By “wordpress welcome page” do you mean the installation page, or a blog with the “Hello world!” post?
