• Regrettably, the link isn’t working due to other problems, but for this forum, I’ll focus on my WP issue. I wrote about this last week and got a few helpful answers, but otherwise dug myself into a deeper hole.
I was in my Dashboard and saw that WP 5.4 was available. Like a fool, I clicked the Update button without doing a proper backup. And so my WP crashed. I did have daily backups running from my provider, x10hosting.com, so I found I had a full backup that downloaded as a tar.gz files. I thought once I expanded it, I could just re-upload the database softsql.sql file to an earlier install, but that didn’t work. I checked the SQL, and it does have my latest posts in it.

While trying to get everything pointed in the right direction, I managed to break my NameServer settings with x10hosting and my domain manager, godaddy.com. But I fired up MAMP and pointed it to the folder with my backup. Still get an error, “Error establishing a database connection”, but if I put an index.html file in the directory, that shows up.

I did edit the wp-config file to make sure it points to the right database, still no luck. It’s possible I’m still trying to hammer my SQL into a 5.4 that didn’t like it before.
I also had a long list of plug-ins because I had a second db in my install to run a Woocommerce site with a different theme. It could be that 5.4 doesn’t like that. But if I try to download and install an earlier WP locally, would I need ALL the plugins? Would I be able to pull a list of the ones I had from somewhere in the SQL?

It’s late as I type this, and I need to turn in. I will hope to find some helpful ideas in the morning.

    Thanking everyone in advance.

  • Talk to your host about restoring your daily backup. They should be able to help you.

Also, setting up a local environment is a great plan, but you do need all the plugins you had before that were active and contributing to the functionality of the site. Your question might be a bit more complex than this support forum can handle. Ideally, you will work with your web host to get your live site working again.

Well, I can give that a try, but I am of course on a free hosting service.
I had hoped that somewhere in my data, there might be a tally of just which PlugIns I have installed. I figured since I could locate my posts in the SQL, maybe that would be listed, too.
