    Hi,
I may have made a big mistake, but I want to verify that I have done so before compounding it by making another. If I have, I want to be sure I take the proper steps to correct the situation.

I recently converted my site to a multi-site. Before doing so I read up on it and backed up my site with the Duplicator plug-in. I also made backup copies of my htaccess.htm and wp-config.php files.

I Watched a video on restoring a website to a sub-site, but it is possible that I did something wrong or misunderstood something. I wanted a clone of my original site as a sub-site so I followed the instructions and restored my backup file to a new sub-site. After the restore was complete, all the expected directories and files were there. But when I tried to visit the newly restored site from the dashboard I got nothing but a blank screen. The dashboard view showed only the typical Hello world! new website.

On reading more about backing up multi-sites it seems I was mistaken and that the free Duplicator plug-in is not capable of backing up or restoring to a multi-site.
    1) Is this conclusion correct?
    2) Is there any way to salvage my clone attempt?
    3) Is there any way to accomplish my goal of cloning my original site as a sub-site with or without restoring my website to its original single site condition?
    4) If I am forced to restore my site to its original condition, can you give me a link to instructions on how to properly do that?

    Thank You in advance!

  • Summary,
    1) using duplicator to merely backup as site seems unnecessary to me, yes.
    2) maybe, do you have a sql backup?
    3) Going backwards is the very nature of a backup, but then you’ll go forward again – with the wisdom only experience bestows.
    4) you need to determine yourself at what point in history you can backup to.

    Details:
A few problems I see need clarification:

First: What are you attempting to do that usual WordPress xml import/export can not do? “Cloning an original site to a sub site” can be done with import/export, no?

Second: If indeed you have “converted my site to a multi-site”, are you simply moving post content from from the main site to a sub site of the network? In a network there is still only the one set of WordPress files, all directories of new sites are virtual – you will not see evidence of duplicated or cloned files anywhere when creating any additional sub sites in a network. Try to move your post content enmasse from site to site with import/export of xml under the WordPress Tools menu. The sub site should be up and running with content of its own before importing new content into it.

Third: By “salvaging” your site, do you mean salvaging the content? If you have content it will still be in the database identified in your original wp-config.php Use phpmyadmin to have a peek at the original database and see if your content is still there. If so, then yes you have a shot of setting things back to right. If there is no content in your database, you are hooped unless you can roll back to a database backup – it won’t matter what you do with Worpdress files if you have no WordPress database to restore. IMHO, backing up files is the least of your worries, always have a foolproof strategy for backing up and recovering your database. If you have a database, you can tell a brand new wp-config.php to connect to it and you may be up and running.

If you have used a plugin(and a video?) to muck it all up, then post in the forum specific to the plugin or video.

    Hello David Sader,
I thank you for your response, but I’m not sure how to reply to your post. We seem to have a real communication problem here. I followed very little of what you said, but The general impression I get is that you think I am an idiot for doing what I did. I don’t think you will be the right person to help me with my problem. I’m going to mark this post as resolved.

Sorry, OB. We all have bad days.
