    Hi,

I am using the free version of UpdraftPlus for Backups for quite some time now. There was no need yet for a restore, but I’m a bit concerned about the restore process (should I ever need it).

Why? Because my setup consists of 2 wordpress instances (one for testing and one live), each instance in a separate file structure but they share one database (each instance with separate table prefix). I do the backups separately for each instance, and I would expect that I could do restores for each instance separately as well.

But I recently discovered under wp-admin->settings->UpdraftPlus-> Tab extended Tools the following:

    • under “Website Information” the table prefix listed is correct, BUT
    • under “database size” ALL tables are listed (i.e. the ones with the correct prefix but also the ones with the other instance’s prefix)

Does this mean the database backup for instance 1 contains the tables for instances 1 and 2?

And if so: what does this mean if I ever need to do a restore? Will the restore for one instance also restore the other instance’s database tables? This would obviously be a NoGo for me….

    Could you please advise?

    Thanks for your support!

Can you post your backup log from the backup/restore tab using a tool such as pastebin.com?

I have uploaded the log to my dropbox, you should be able to access it.

    Thanks

    Hi,

With the free version of UpdraftPlus only core tables are being backed up which means only one of your sites tables are being backed up at the moment (I don’t want to mention the specific prefix here)

You would need this add-on: https://updraftplus.com/shop/moredatabase/ or Premium.

With Premium, you can choose which tables you want to restore so you could restore the tables from just one site,

    Hi @vupdraft ,

thank you for your answer, but it seems contradictory to me:

You said “only one of your sites tables are being backed up at the moment”. That’s fine! According to my understanding, with the other site’s UpdraftPlus plugin installation the other site’s tables are being backed up then, and the two site’s backups are completely independant! True?

But why should I need Premium then? If my backups contain only the tables for one site, then I don’t need to select specific tables for my restore, so I could just restore all tables…

Or did I misunderstand you completely?

UpdraftPlus treats the entire backup as one instance. However, I suspect that it is treating the core tables tables for the hosting196091 site as the core tables (as opposed to the other site) because that is the site UpdraftPlus was backing up at the time.

In theory if you install UpdraftPlus on the other site, it would backup that sites core tables which could give you two different DB backups. UpdraftPlus has not been tested in this way and so I would recommend that you do a trial restoration for both sites.

If you potentially want two partial backups, this may work. If you want a backup of the entire DB, you can’t do this with the free version.

Again, I stress, please do a test restore so that you know what results you will get before a disaster happens.

Just as a further note, when I say do a test restore, please do this on a blank WP instance on, for example, local host. Do not do the test restore on the actual site.
