A day after one of my plugins auto updated, I noticed that one of my pages was broken. Fortunately, I had a backup from before the auto update. My thought was to restore it, so the site was working until I could figure out what the problem was. The restore seemed to go fine, except that the plugin was the updated version, so the site was still broken.

I’m confident that the date of the backup was before the auto update for two reasons, some recent information on the site was missing and I had a couple of mysterious interactions. Moments after the restore, my dashboard showed that three plugins needed updating, but after a couple of minutes, the red update flag had disappeared. Given that my site is set to auto update plugins, I thought that the restored site was doing that (exactly what I didn’t want it to do). Thinking that your product must have some way of preventing that, otherwise a restore wouldn’t end up being to a state exactly like a previous time, I found Total Upkeep>Settings>Auto Updates and turned off updating for all plugins. I then tried the restore again and, again, the unwanted update to the trouble making plugin happened.

How can I get what I want, that is, a restore to exactly what I had a couple of days ago.

    Hi @arlingtoner

Thanks for the excellent question, I can definitely see how frustrating it would be to be in that situation.

From what you’ve described, it sounds like after you restore your backup the auto-update is occurring again. What I believe is happening is that even after you disable the auto-update setting, once you perform the restoration, it also restores the auto-update setting, so you’re caught in kind of a never-ending loop.

This is definitely a flaw in the logic of the plugin, since plugin updates are one of the biggest use-cases for needing to restore a backup, so I’ve reported this to our developers.

The easiest way to get around this would be to disable the auto-update setting immediately after you perform the restoration. The plugin checks for auto-updates every 5 minutes according to your server’s clock (i.e. :05, :10, :15), so you should have enough time to change the setting before the next check.

If you can’t beat the clock, another option would be to use a plugin like WP Rollback to install the previous version of the plugin without restoring the backup.

Thanks for your timely response. Even though I think my reflexes have slowed over the years, I believe that I could beat 5 minutes. However, it seemed more coherent to restore the backup (so I’m certain about the state of the site) and then roll back the unwanted plugin update with WP Rollback. That seems to have worked perfectly.
