Hello, I just installed the Plugin on my site and I tried to run the Conversion and I am getting an error:

An error occurred while connecting to REST API. Please try again.

    How can I fix this?

    Thanks.

  • Just for the record, I changed the permalink structure to post name and it worked.
    No idea why.

    1. Clear caching plugin.
    2. Clear browser cache/cookies (Ctrl + F5)

    Did the trick for me!

Tried all the above and going incognito / private mode or clearing the browser cookies and cache fixed this issue: “An error occurred while connecting to REST API. Please try again”

@mateuszgbiorczyk hi, I also have the same issue after starting converting all images.

    I get 500 from https://speed-zone.pl/wp-json/webp-converter/v1/paths?_wpnonce=c23a930c05
couple of seconds after starting converting.

There is nothing related to that issue in debug.log.

Any ideas? I’ve already tried what was described in previous posts.

@rafalperon How much memory do you have on your server? It’s about the memory_limit value. Can you increase it? Additionally, check the max_execution_time value – set it for more seconds.

    @mateuszgbiorczyk I have memory_limit set to 256M and I cannot increase it.
Regarding max_execution_time I had 30. I’ve changed its Local Value to 240 using php.ini. But I still get the same 500 error after about 25 seconds.

@rafalperon The problem is the memory limit, not necessarily the execution time. Increase the memory limit.

@mateuszgbiorczyk Unfortunately now my server has this memory limit constant and I cannot change it (it depends on server pricing plan).

Is there any workaround for that? Maybe I can somehow modify the script to process files in smaller batches? Or input smaller directories to process?

What should be desired memory limit? 512M?

Basically I didn’t have problems with that limit before in WordPress.

@rafalperon You probably have a lot of images on your website and therefore need more memory. Unfortunately, one solution is to increase the amount of memory on the server.
