Responsive theme for preschools

I am a noobi to wordpress and website development. Please bear with me and any help would be appreciated. Here is what I need:

Couple of local preschools have no websites and I volunteered to provide them free websites including hosting. I decided to go with bluehost since it seems to be within my budget and they provide wordpress.

Now I am looking for a theme which enables me to create one child theme for Preschools. My intention is to showcase this child them to one school and if they like it, standardize it for all the schools.

The schools do not need/want any social features (blogs, comments etc.) but they should be able to do simple updates like posting new photos, calendar and events text. There will be static pages which might not change often.

Once I create a website for a specific school, I would like to pass on the responsibility of updating the content to the school…perhaps train one of the teachers. For this I need very simple content management interface for non-tech users.

Please advise if responsive is a good theme for my needs.

Does it provide calendar interface?

What help can I expect in creating a child theme? I am willing to make a small donation.
