Responsive design problems

I’m not sure I understand, the table does respond to the width by reducing its size so that the 8 columns fit. It doesn’t entirely fit on a mobile phone but that’s because of the pixel padding used on the <td>.

If you grab hold of the window and make it as narrow as possible, you will see the top image changes size to adapt to the size of the window but the lower image does not

The two images are exactly the same but the only difference is that the lower image is inserted into a table

Does this make it clearer to you?

I am pretty much a beginner at this so it may be that the solution is obvious to you but mysterious to me!
