resized images, meaning adaptive images?

I see that jetpack says that it can “optimize” images by resizing them, but does this mean that it is serving “adapted images.” Meaning, even though the source images is say 1080px, but a page needs to only show it at 300px…that jetpack will serve it as 300px (which is what shortpixel would do with SP adaptive images plug in). So “resized” here is synonymous with “adapted” or not?
