• Hi all first off let me start by saying what a wonderful place WordPress is and makes me feel whilst reading the site, forums and other peoples blogs.

Secondly I apologise if this post is in the wrong forum but I couldnt see a correct location to put this in.

Right on to business. I am wanting to start a blog. The blog will basically be a place where I will review certain items that I have or get in the future.

I have used a few WordPress blogs in the past as testers but want to get a bit more serious now with it.

    Here are my requirements.

    – I am wanting it so that once I or someone in my team make a blog post I want to make it so that visitors can also make their own review of the item and give us some sort of star rating.

    – is it possible to create categories that link to pages. For example if I have a category called “Weather” if I make a blog post under that category it automatically maps it to the “Weather” page too. I’m hoping this will keep housekeeping to a minimum.

    – Finally web hosting. I am living in the UK and I have previously used a company for my web hosting that is in America. I’m wanting to get shut of this company as on some sites I am running at the moment the pages seem to load and refresh REALLY SLOWLY as of late and so I’m wanting to transfer them. Anyway I’ve been looking at what WordPress suggests and I’m quite interested in using Bluehost. I see that this is also a company in the US so I am cruelly wondering will the pages load slowly for me because I’m too far away…. It does sound like I’m being daft but ive had no feedback from my current host. Also one I create a domain via Bluehost can I create and host more than one site at a time?

Plugins – Can you use plugins when the site is hosted via Bluehost?

I hope I can get some answers before I start creating my site.

    Regards.

  • 1. There are specific review plugins that you could have a look at.

    2. WordPress will automatically generate category pages (archives) on demand. all you you have to o is provide links to these pages for your visitors.

    3. I think your Bluehost specific questions would be best answered by Bluehost themselves. To that end, I’ve tagged this topic accordingly in the hopes it will attract the attention of a Bluehost rep but, in the meantime, I’d suggest contacting them directly. As a potential customer, this is a good time to fire as many questions at them as you need. ??

You mentioned that you are in the UK but didn’t mention what kind of site you intend to set up. So have you thought about Data Protection? There are specific issues to consider when hosting personal data (eg email addresses) outside of the UK. Again, this would be a good question to raise with Bluehost.

I’m in the UK and use a very good UK host for all of my sites. If you want further details, please feel free to contact me directly using the contact details on https://quirm.net/contact/ Please understand that I am not connected with this hosting company in any way. Nor do I have any form of affiliate deal with them. But I’m happy to pass on details if it will help.

    4. Plugins – yes, you can install plugins on any self-hosted WordPress site – including one hosted with Bluehost

    HTH

I know that with Bluehost, you pay for hosting once, and can host an unlimited number of domains under that same account.
Also, yes, you can use plugins with Bluehost. For the speed of your site, you should see if each plugin runs efficiently without requiring too many resources and also try not to use too many plugins on each site.

You may be able to simply speed up your site by using a plugin like W3 Total Cache. You can optimize your pictures using WP Smush.it and you could use a free service like https://www.cloudflare.com to load balance parts of your site.

Check your site speed before and after using https://tools.pingdom.com/fpt/
