Request to plugin developers

  • When you develop a plugin, dear developers, please PLEASE test it during XMLRPC as well. I have had several support requests from my ecto users about failed postings due to installed plugins. Please test if your plugin works when a new post is made or edited via XMLRPC. WordPress will also call your plugin during XMLRPC and some functions may not be available then. Here’s a recent example from a user:

    Are you giving us free copies to test with? Why should I have to buy your program to test my plugins and make sure it doesn’t break anything? If you’re giving free copies to test with, I’ll test mine.

    Dude… XMLRPC isn’t some commercial package that someone would need to provide free copies of ??

    No, but Ecto is. It costs 17.99

    Well if plugin developers have to test the XMLRPC feature, the using the free W.Bloggar would work. We wouldn’t have to test the blogging client, just the server side interaction.

    Honestly, I don’t understand why this request is so upsetting. The OP made a clearly legitimate request that does highlight a major issue with some of the currently released plugins.

    There are a few plugin available which break the XMLRPC functionality. And, when your plugin breaks the XMLRPC functionality, it prevents the user of your plugin from using any third-party weblog clients, including ones which the user may have paid $17.99 for. This is a major issue and I would also appreciate it if plugin developers tested their plugins against XMLRPC.

    If you are plugin developer and would like to test your plugin against XMLRPC, feel free to use W.Bloggar (free, Windows), Ecto (21 day trial, Mac and Windows), MarsEdit (30 day trial, Mac), any of the Dashboard Widgets listed here (free, Mac), any of the Linux weblog clients listed here (free, Linux), or Plogit (free, PalmOS).

    Thanks, macmanx, couldn’t have said it better. It’s indeed only the server-side interaction via XML-RPC that is at issue here and not the blog client. One could even write a simple PHP script to post a test entry with XML-RPC.
