• Hi there

I have set up a subdomain to create a new wordpress site and do all the development there before replacing the existing wordpress site on the root domain. The new site is completely different to the existing site in terms of development, features, content structure, plug-ins used etc.

I am now ready to put the new developed site live and want to copy it over from the subdomain to the root domain.

It seems like most of the instructions I read online is to copy over / download all the wordpress files from the subdomain via ftp to your computer, and then upload them to the root directory via FTP.

I was however thinking that maybe using the plugin WP All-in-One Migration would be more straightforward? I am planning to export the site from the subdomain, then import it to the old wordpress site in the root domain.

Is there any reason / potential issues I should be aware of if I use the WP All-One Migration instead of copying over files via FTP manually?

    Thanks!

  • No, it’s easier to use a plugin, and more likely to get it all. Doing it manually by FTP, individual files can get errors and you might not notice. Always use a zip file and it’s way easier.

But for your case, it seems like it would be much easier to just move the files on your server. It would just be the wp-content folder. You can export your database to a file. Empty the old one, and import the new one. Done. This assumes that the two WP versions are the same version, but even if not, it should be simple to update the one that isn’t.

Be aware that if you have links in your content, those need to change. Also, the paths to images will have the subdomain path instead of the real path.
And you might want to make Redirect rules in your .htaccess for any old pages that have a new address. Some plugins help with changing your domain during the migration. Others do not. Not sure if All in One does.
