• Hi there,

I would like to build a new website using WordPress to replace an existing website. The domain and cPanel hosting will remain the same.

I have built several websites with WordPress so I’m comfortable installing it through cPanel. I don’t need to keep the current site live once I have installed WordPress, it can come down completely straight away and will be replaced with a maintenance mode page in WordPress, while we build the site behind that. My question is, how do I delete all of the files that are there already so that it doesn’t get confused and send people to the wrong place?

I’m happy using cPanel and WordPress, but ftp is a bit of a mystery to me. I’ve searched the forums but they all seem to deal with keeping the existing site live while you build it.

Thanks so much in advance for any help ??

    Amy

Can you please rephrase the question to be more precise? It’s a bit confusing–because you can just delete the old website and stand-up a new WordPress instance.

Notes: although you wish to remove the old site immediately, I always recommend backing up the old site first. In CPanel, you can do all this in File Manager.

Hi Tada, thanks for the reply. I will definitely back up the site before I delete it, in case we do need to restore it.

I have read a lot about people leaving files from the old website so that the new WordPress install doesn’t show up, you end up with a broken home page, so I want to make sure I delete the right files and keep anything I need so that the WordPress site shows up properly.

So i guess my question is, which files do I need to delete to completely get rid of the current website before I install WordPress?

If it helps, this is the site I’ll be working on… espressini.co.uk

    Thanks again!

Also whilst in webhost under current listing it has my old web site which isn’t live and if I go to remove it it removes WP as well.

As pretty basic as it seems to some where do I build my website in my web host or outside it in WP and somehow transfer it across.
