• It seems like every tiny upgrade breaks my website. I keep going to login and make an update, to find a blank white screen in wp-admin.

Its not the plugins. I’ve tried disabling.

The first time it was the config file. it was old. i upgraded. then it upgraded my database. i thought i was fine.

but it keeps happening. i download wp, and manually upgrade. it seems to fix it temporarily. but then i go back to my site and i can’t get access again. is there something wrong with the upgrade script?

i am at my wits end. but you know that already ??

  • Whatever this is, it’s specific to your site and/or server. Have you tried looking in your servers error logs for clues?

    Hi Esmi-
the only thing i can see in any logs for my site is

“Premature end of script headers: index.php”

which doesn’t seem to make much sense.

Any other ideas of specific things to look for?

And what is in index.php? If necessary, drop a copy of the file into the WordPress pastebin and post the pastebin url here. Perhaps someone will be able to spot the problem and suggest a solution.

I would if I hadn’t overwritten it with a clean index.php when I saw the error. Just reinstalled the wp-admin and includes folders. That seemed to do the trick, but it doesn’t solve the “repeat” thing.

I am installing the Disable WordPress Core Update plugin and see if that keeps it under control for now. I prefer to update manually anyway. Thanks Anyway!

I am installing the Disable WordPress Core Update plugin

I really wouldn’t do that. One possible reason for this repeating problem is that your site is being hacked. Keeping up with the latest version of WordPress is the best way to minimise this from happening.

really? should i reset my database and ftp passwords?

any other clues if there is someone meddling?

i have a number of wordpress sites installed, and its the only one it keeps happening to.

Issues with the admin area are often the first signs of a hack, I’m afraid. I was hoping it might be something simple but it would explain why the problem keeps repeating. Whilst your upgrades might resolve the obvious problem, hackers leave “back doors” on sites so that they can get back into them very easily again. So pretty soon, you’re back to square one with a broken admin.

The next time this happens, scan your site and try looking through these resources:

The only other possibility that I can think of is that you’re on a bad server and your core files are being corrupted. Any chance you could ask your hosts to move your site to a new server?

thanks. super helpful. next time I will look at those links.

i am on dreamhost. they offer no wp support, but I did notice that my sites are split on 2 servers. i could ask them to consolidate everything onto one.
