• I have the same problem since installing 3.9.2. I tried to change from the current theme to either Twenty Fourteen or Brownline. When I installed and activate Brownline, it showed an extra “home” (total 2). I then changed to Twenty Fourteen. There were no extra “home” items on the menu bar. When I went back to the current format, it had an extra “home (total 2). And, when I reactivate Brownline, I get a total of 3 “home” items on the menu bar. When I open the “Menus” page, it shows me multiple “Home”, but gives no options to delete any of them or otherwise modify the menu display. On the “Most Recent” tab, it lists Home twice. On the “View All” tab it lists home 3 times, which is what displays when I try to activate the Brownline theme. I have already deactivated all the new plugins, and deleted all the newly added themes. The problem persists. How do I fix this?

The web site URL is https://www.bellisamacakes.com/?page_id=5.
    (That is the Blog page.)

  • Hello Bellisama,

    • Login into your dashboard, and go to Appearance > Menus.
    • All menu-items is represented as tab in column.
    • On the right hand side, you will find an arrow beside “Page” which pop-opens that menu-item.
    • At lower left corner, you’ll find remove.
    • Click away all un-necessary home links.

That did not solve the issue. As I stated in the original post, there is no link/icon to remove or delete items on that page.

“When I open the “Menus” page, it shows me multiple “Home”, but gives no options to delete any of them or otherwise modify the menu display. On the “Most Recent” tab, it lists Home twice. On the “View All” tab it lists home 3 times, which is what displays when I try to activate the Brownline theme.”

Using the Brownline theme, I now have a new message on the Menus page.

Your theme does not natively support menus, but you can use them in sidebars by adding a “Custom Menu” widget on the Widgets screen.

How can this be displaying a menu, but not support one? And how do I edit this?

    • Login into your dashboard
    • First, add a new page and give it a title blog. Don’t write anything in content area.
    • Go to General > Reading.
    • In reading settings, you will find front page displays.
    • You will find two options, 1 is your latest posts and 2 is A Static page (Select below).
    • You need to opt for A Static Page and specify it as your home page.
    • Select nothing for post page, you need to select Blog (which you have create).
    • Click Save changes.

That did not help. All that is already done. “Posts” was already set to Blog, and “Front Page” was already set to “Static” and “Home. Pages that were already created are Blog, Calendar, and Contact Us. And, these show once each in the drop down list for both “Front Page” and “Posts.”

I did discover something odd last night. If I go to the “Pages” section of the Admin, it lists Home, Calendar, Contact Us and Blog. But, on the web site, there are two “Home” pages on the menu. If I delete the home page on the Pages section of the dashboard, the additional “Home” page goes away–meaning there is then only one “Home” page on the menu bar. However, the “Home” page that remains on the web site has no way to add any content to it. And, this happens regardless of the theme I activate.

    @bellisama

You are correct; that theme does in fact add it’s own “Home” menu item … some how ??

That said, I would strongly suggest using a different theme, reasons being:

    – the Brownline theme has not been updated since 2008-11-12
    – as such, there is a high possibility that there is a conflict with the latest WP as per the warning notice on the theme page:

!This theme hasn’t been updated in over 2 years. It may no longer be maintained or supported and may have compatibility issues when used with more recent versions of WordPress.

    – the theme is not responsive, that is, it will not display on mobile devices in the manner that has become expected for modern web sites.
