Rendering .docx as .htm?

Using Internet Explorer, my .docx files are being treated as though they are .htm files. Clicking on a .docx file to download will open up a new page and try to render the file in the browser. And when I say render, I mean that it just spits out garbage. Trying to right-click the file and “Save Target As” also tries to save the file as a .htm. Which is weird because the link is most certainly pointing to a .docx. Firefox and Chrome seem to work on both Mac and PC. Any ideas would be appreciated.
