Render blocking CSS served from CDN

    I have run a Google Pagespeed Insights test on my site and there are a number or Render blocking resources that it ha pointed out.

    A number of these include the likes of jquery.js, jetpack.css, woocommerce-layout.css to name a few.

    A lot of these resources are being served from the Jetpack CDN.

    I was wondering, since they are being served from the CDN, does that mean that I cannot change the load order of these resources?

    Hi there,

    If they’re served over our CDN they’re served directly from our servers, not yours, so you won’t have control over that, no.

    However, you can disable the CDN for static resources and use it only for image files on your site if you prefer. You’ll find that option under Jetpack ->Settings in the Performance and Speed section.

    Are the servers not optimized to deliver the files in a manner that would not be classed as render blocking?

    Our servers are optimized, yes, else the entire CDN for static resources would be pointless ??

    But keep in mind that a lot of the order in which resources are loaded is determined by the software, or a particular theme or plugin itself – some resources just necessarily need to load before others in order for everything to work.

    A service like Pagespeed Insights essentially just checks whether your site is following a specific set of rules, but doesn’t measure the actual performance of the site. Tools like this can be very useful for troubleshooting a problem and figuring out what’s causing it. But it’s normal for them to return a number of errors and suggestions for any site, and in the absence of a problem, that’s not something to worry about.

    If you are seeing actual performance problems when activating the CDN vs deactivating it, then it’s something we need to look into. In that case it would be best if you open a support ticket at https://jetpack.com/contact-support/?rel=support so we can get information on your site and run our own tests on our end.
