• In an effort to thwart would be brute-force cracking attempts on my WordPress installation I would like to change the login-name of the default ‘admin’ account. Is this possible? It does not seem to be from looking at the wp-admin profile tab.

  • As far as I know, it is not possible via WordPress. You will have to “hack” into your MySQL database.

Using PHPMyAdmin or similar, browse to your wp_users table, then just change the login name of user #1.

when i did this and saved the changes, i got an error message from my phpmyadmin program when i attempted to logout of phpmyadmin telling me that i did not have access privileges. or somesuch. to be honest, i was so terrified i immediately hit my browser’s back button and went back to the wp-users table and undid my change. any idea what could have caused this? am i stuck with the default login?
