Renamed login URL not working

When I set the wp-login rename url it doesn’t login the user properly.
So for example, i have the wordpress installed in:
https://www.site.com/directory/
when i set the wp-login url to:
https://www.site.com/staff-login/I can get to the login page using https://www.site.com/staff-login/
but when the user info is entered, it does not login and redirects to 404 error with url
https://www.site.com/directory/staff-login/I cannot figure out why this is happening. Any suggestions?
