Removing white space around portrait slides

Hi there, in the slideshow the landscape orientation images are great – they fill the slideshow. However the portrait images that come next have large areas of white at either side. I assume the width of the show is fixed and that causes it?
Is there any way to get the slideshow to change to suit landscape and portrait images.
